This week is all about numbers. Let’s start with these: 10–16 June 2019. They are the dates for Men’s Health Week. Its primary focus is on raising awareness of preventable health issues and encouraging men to seek professional advice and assistance for health-related concerns and it’s doing so by using numbers.

In previous years Men’s Health Week has focused on different areas including diabetes, stress and so on. However, this year they are asking men to pick a number. For example, did you know:

  • 1: man in 5 dies before the age of 65;
  • 2: men in 5 die before the age of 75;
  • 3: out of 4 suicides are men;
  • 5: portions of fruit and veg a day is recommended;
  • 10: cigarette smokers die 10 years younger on average than non-smokers;
  • 14: units of alcohol is the maximum you should have a week; and
  • 150: minutes of moderate physical activity should be undertaken per week.

The campaign also strives to address the impact of inequality and deprivation on men’s health. The Men’s Health Forum’s idea is that by understanding numbers, men can start to change their own statistics.

From my perspective, as someone who deals with issues faced by employers on a daily basis, the ideas behind this campaign can be applied to all employees in the workplace as well. It makes practical business sense because, having a healthier and happier workforce, helps individuals and employers too. It will:

  • Improve morale in the workplace;
  • Improve employee engagement for example team sports to encourage teamwork, loyalty and enthusiasm;
  • Increase business performance;
  • Reduce sickness absence, by encouraging healthy eating and regular exercise to help staff become more resilient to illness and injury; and
  • Reduce stress in the workplace, by having staff who are healthy in body and mind.
