From 23rd to 29th of September 2019, it is National Eye Health Week in order to promote the importance of eye health and the need for regular sight tests for all.
Statistics have shown that approximately 2,000,000 people in the UK are living with sight loss which is significant enough to have an impact on their daily lives, however, in a number of cases, this loss is preventable.
Why are sight tests important:-
- they can detect early signs of conditions such as glaucoma which can be treated if found soon enough;
- other health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure can be detected; and
- in order to improve your vision eating well, not smoking and wearing eye protection in bright sunlight can assist.
It should also be noted that research is the only way that new treatments for eye disease, sight loss and blindness can be discovered. The intention of the campaign is to educate people on the importance of eye care and to ensure that this is being maintained appropriately.
